Art Collection DescriptionThe Art Gallery of Nova Scotia collects, preserves, and exhibits visual arts for the benefit of residents and visitors to Nova Scotia. Over 17,000 works are currently in the Permanent and Study Collections. New works are added by donation, bequest and purchase. The Gallery's collection focuses on works by: • Visual artists with strong ties to Nova Scotia, such as Maud Lewis • Visual artists with strong ties to the Atlantic Provinces • Canadian artists, both historical and contemporary • International visual artists that complement the Permanent Collection Archival Collection: The archives contain biographical files on all artists in the Gallery's collection. Currently the Gallery is also working towards the development of an archives featuring the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
Artist Files Collection DescriptionSince 1973 the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has assembled a collection of over 1,500 vertical files. The material focuses on Canadian art, with a special emphasis on Nova Scotia, the Atlantic region, and folk art. The collection is accessible on the institution's database.
