Irene Avaalaaqiaq Tiktaalaaq (b 1941) is an Inuit artist who was born at Princess Mary Lake near Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canada. She moved to Baker Lake in 1958 to give birth to one of her children. Tiktaalaaq was raised on the land by her grandparents in the traditional Inuit style. Tiktaalaaq produced drawings, prints and was also noted for her wallhangings. In 1999 Tiktaalaaq was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by the University of Guelph. Having never attended school, she was proud that her art was being recognized.
